HIST 345 The Catholic Response to Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century

A study of how the Roman Catholic Church responded to the challenges coming from the Protestant reformers and their supporters by such measures as the Council of Trent that reformed abuses and clarified Catholic teachings, Index of Prohibited Books and the various inquisitions (Spanish, Roman, local), proper training of clergy (seminaries) and laity (schools and CCD), preaching and publication of theological and devotional books, new religious orders (Ursulines, Jesuits, Capuchins, Oratorians, etc.), and military measures (War of the Schmalkaldic League, Religious Wars of France, Spanish Armada, Thirty Years War, etc.) How various countries were transformed by these changes will also be explored.
