HIST 309C Muslims, Christians and Jews in the Mediterranean World
The Mediterranean has long been a diverse world in which people of different faiths lived in close proximity, sometimes in peace¿with churches, synagogues, and mosques in the same city¿and sometimes in tension¿as crusaders, pirates, and holy warriors. This course introduces students to that multi-religious milieu. We pay special attention to the interactions of communities of the three Abrahamic faiths¿Muslims, Christians, and Jews¿from Spain to North Africa to southern Europe to the Middle East. Through primary sources and modern scholarship, we consider the dynamics of these communities¿ interactions and consider how people throughout the human past have dealt with religious difference¿.
