POL 357 Revolution and Reaction in Nineteenth Century Political Thought

This course examines the long nineteenth century, from the outbreak of revolution in France in 1789 up to the first years of the twentieth century, with a focus on the push and pull of revolutionary and counterrevolutionary social and political thought. Readings are to be determined but may include: Burke, Sieyes, Lammenais, De Maistre, Constant, Saint-Simon, Tocqueville, Comte, Donoso Cortes, Marx and Engels, Proudhon, Mill, Acton, and readings in Catholic Social Thought.
