SAS 115 Ethics and AI

Artificial intelligence is expanding more rapidly than our consideration of the ethics of these fast changing technologies. AI offers opportunities to advance human flourishing, but also carries unintended risks and challenges, impacting all majors and career paths. This class will offer hands-on demonstrations, interactive discussions, and talks with experts and ambassadors from Washington, DC, and around the world. The Catholic Church and Pope Francis are engaged in negotiations to help shape the ethical development and deployment of AI (which I participate in). We will explore an overview of some of the challenges and opportunities of developing and using ethical AI to promote just peace, solidarity, and the common good, particularly for the poor and vulnerable, in issues including national security, education, health care, the environment, work, music and arts, psychology and faith.
