SAS 102 Shaping a Work Life

This course aims to help students identify their values, skills and interests, which professions best compliment these strengths and strategies they can use to effectively conduct searches for jobs and internships in a way that builds upon their strengths. In addition, this course also seeks to help students discern that talents and interests can also allow them to discern and reflect upon how they can use their gifts in service or in leadership to their families, communities and the broader world. As students explore various professions and positions, this course helps them ask the question and reflect upon their response ¿what constitutes meaningful work¿ in terms of what do I find interesting, what benefit does it provide not only to me, but to society as a whole and how does it contribute to the greater good of society. This career development course seeks to provide students with the tools necessary to navigate a job and internship search, provide them with the skills and strategies necessary to gain employment, but also explore the larger perspective of professions, how positions prepare students for the next step in their career and how their motivations and passions influence their job search. We will also utilize the practice of discernment that encourages students to reflect upon how they make decisions, what factors contribute to their decision making process, their personal and professional goals and how they can integrate this information in such a way to lead a more balanced personal and professional life.
