SAS 111 The Theory and Practice of Pilgrimage
Why have believers for many centuries undertaken journeys to visit sites associated with their faith? In this class, students will explore the history of pilgrimage by reading a variety of texts, including saints' lives, pilgrim guides, and of course, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; examining sacred art; and, most importantly, undertaking three actual pilgrimages in the D.C. area: to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America, and St. Matthew's Cathedral.
