EDUC 579 Mathematics Methods for Secondary Schools
The course acquaints candidates with various approaches to Mathematics, English Language Arts, and History (Social Studies) education and the major controversies in the teaching profession for these content area subjects. Candidates further develop their philosophy of content area education, planning for instruction, and ability critique curriculum materials.
The course is critical in the preparation of future secondary Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Social Studies teachers because it provides the opportunity to extend and apply the theory and practice learned in prior courses for application in the classroom context prior to the Student Teaching Internship.
By reflecting deeply on how knowledge is generated in the candidate¿s chosen content area and its role in the education of future generations, the course contributes to the search for truth and the service to the Church, the nation, and the world.
The course includes mandatory registration in a 30 hour Practicum field placement. Students will be assigned to a Secondary school site for the semester and many course assignments incorporate observation and reflection from the practicum experience.
Prerequisites: EDUC 386/596, EDUC 382/582, or Departmental Permission
