MUS 503B Conducting Seminar for Conducting Minor

Introduction to score reading: orchestral, opera, and oratorio scores. How to learn a score as a conductor. Score reading at the keyboard: open-score Bach chorales, and slow movements of string quartets. Transpositions. Conducting technique: developing further upon the lessons of Basic Conducting, refining the language of gesture, and applying the lessons to actual scores of the orchestral, opera, ballet, and oratorio repertoire. Analyzing the technique requirements of various sections of scores, arias, recitatives, developing a concept of color, balance, blend and ensemble. Departmental consent.
