GS 203 Storytelling in Video Gaming: Language, Culture, and Identity
This interdisciplinary course bridges the gap between entertainment and education, preparing students for the growing global influence of gaming as a medium for storytelling and cultural exchange. It explores how popular Asian games integrate cultural imagery, philosophical values, and innovative narratives that captivate U.S. and global audiences. Students will analyze storytelling techniques in games, examine the strategies of leading Asian gaming companies, and investigate how game streaming platforms use language to shape unique pop cultures. Through hands-on activities, field trips, and collaborative projects, students will develop culturally authentic game narratives while addressing ethical considerations, inclusivity, and social justice in the gaming industry. The course also engages students in reflecting on moral responsibilities in media creation and representation, aligning with the mission of Catholic University.
