GS 201 European Identities through Film
The class discusses a selection of landmark films that showcase and explore the national identities of Europeans at home and abroad. Movies are analyzed as both narrative storytelling devices and propaganda. We will explore the social issues portrayed in those films, including: the rise of dictatorships, struggles of class, race, and gender, creative expression, and aesthetic style. The course will focus in particular on German and Spanish cinema from the mid-20th-century onward; students can conduct research on films from other European regions as well. Students will analyze film language and editing, while learning about national histories and contemporary discourses of European societies.
