GS 202 Global Asian Crime Fictions

This course examines how Asian female authors navigate themes of identity, family, community, and cultural conflict through the lens of crime fiction, spanning the diverse cultural landscapes of the United States, Argentina, and Japan. Students will explore the works of three renowned authors: Celeste Ng (Little Fires Everywhere), Claudia Pi eiro (Thursday Night Widows), and Yoko Ogawa (The Housekeeper and the Professor). By engaging with these texts and their film or TV adaptations, students will analyze how identity, morality, and societal pressures shape personal and communal choices. This course invites critical thinking and discussion about race, culture, and identity while reflecting on enduring questions: How do we make the right choice? How do we navigate life in societies different from our own? Through the rich narratives of Asian crime fiction, students will gain insights into the genre's contributions to global literature and contemporary cultural conversations.
