ANTH 228 Afro-Latino Cultures of the Americas

At the same time as the arrival of the first Europeans to the Americas in the 15th century, Africans began their trans-Atlantic journey into the "New World" as well. Since then until our times, the cultural contributions of Africans and their descendants in the Americas have been rich and diverse. This interdisciplinary course will explore these contributions from the time of the Conquest, to colonial societies and through the 19th century to our times. We will examine the visual arts, music, literary texts, and films by Afro-Latino creators, as well as representations of these cultures by non Afro-Latino artists. We will also study how race and ethnicity are constructed, deconstructed or appropriated, and how this corpus addresses the current debates on Latin/o American cultural canon and identity. This course will be taught in English.
