ANTH 206 Material Culture

This course is about objects and artifacts, specifically how we can learn about ourselves as individuals, communities, and a species through the things that we make, use, and discard. The course emphasizes the connection between science and social context, combining Natural Science techniques that determine provenience, date, manufacturing technology, and conservation strategy, Social Science approaches to material culture, social analysis, and heritage studies, and Humanistic concerns for curation, interpretation, and meaning. As a result, it casts a wide net that provides multiple entry points for students coming from different disciplinary backgrounds who wish to expand their knowledge about how we make things, and how things make us.
