SPAN 330 Unruly, Unafraid, Unsung: Women Writers of Spain/Latin America Who Disrupted the Status Quo

This course introduces students to the works of women writers from Spain and Latin America (19/20c) who have challenged injustice and convention. With a focus on literature but not limited to it, the course will explore the contexts in which strong female voices from both sides of the Atlantic have found the courage to brave difficulties and intimidation and to demand change. We will ask questions such as: What social and historical forces have determined these writers' viewpoints? Can writing solve the problems explored in their texts? Why have these women writers been overlooked? Class will be taught in Spanish.
