SPAN 329 Hispanic Immigration and Multiculturalism Through Literature

Through an in-depth analysis of literary pieces, this course examines main cultural issues regarding Hispanic immigration to the United States, and the impact on American culture, particularly as it relates to contemporary debates on multiculturalism. We will conduct close readings of literary pieces dealing with these issues, including novels, plays, poetry and essays by Luis Alfaro, Josefina López, García Canclini, Carlos Fuentes, Sonia Nazario, and Paul Cuadros (among others). We will complement these readings with the study of journalistic pieces, films and songs. The course will focus on the Hispanic community of the Washington, DC, area. This course will be taught in Spanish.
