SOC 355 National Security in American Film, Television, and Popular Culture Post-9/11

It is often said that the 9/11 terror attacks against the United States changed everything. This course will explore national and homeland security in American film, television, and popular culture in the post 9/11 era as compared to the 1990s. Students will have the opportunity to delve into how American popular culture's vision of national/homeland security has changed post 9/11, as well as evaluate how well or poorly this arena is portrayed by American film and television/streaming entertainment. Students will be exposed to national security-themed films, books, and other mainstream entertainment from various eras and will discuss related themes and trends as far as how the topic is treated in the post-9/11 world.
