SPAN 209 Latino American Migrant Narratives

This interdisciplinary course will examine a wide range of narratives from or dealing with Hispanic immigrants, such as written texts (journalistic, testimonial or fictional), music, films, and cartoons. We will look at the four basic stages of immigration: the origin or reasons to migrate, the travel, arrival and adaptation, and return to the home country (as it happens in some cases). The course will offer a broad coverage of migrations, both domestic and international, across Latin America, the United States, and Spain (including migration between Spain and Latin America and other European countries. The course will be conducted in Spanish and will include a component of service learning project design. Prerequisite: SPAN 104, SPAN 111, placement test, or instructor's authorization.
