POL 500 Ethics and AI Policy
Artificial intelligence is expanding more rapidly than policy and law. We will consider the variety of perspectives on ethics, AI, and policy, and the impacts and applied ethics of these fast changing technologies. AI offers opportunities to advance human flourishing, but also carries unintended risks and challenges. This class will offer hands on demonstrations, interactive discussions, and talks with experts from Washington, DC, and around the world. The Catholic Church and Pope Francis are engaged in negotiations to help shape the ethical development and policies of AI (which I participate in). We will explore some of the challenges and opportunities of developing policy and law for ethical AI development and application, in issues including national security, lethal autonomous weapons systems, cybersecurity, law enforcement, election interference and democracy, peacebuilding, public health, environmental protection, and public-private partnerships.
