CLAS 208 Italy: Ancient Culture in Context

Explores the cultural presence and the cultural relations between the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans, in central and southern Italy. The course starts in the south of Italy, exploring Greek presence and influence (considering Paestum, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and the environs of the Bay of Naples). It then moves northward to discuss the Etruscans and early Rome, and then finally considers the Romans themselves, studying both their appropriation of aspects of these two other cultures, and the development of the Romans' own more local and indigenous traditions.
