SEM 702 History of Ancient Israel

The course begins during the so-called Patriarchal Period with the Bronze Age empires and the resulting power vacuum following their collapse. It continues with the rise of biblical Israel and its fate under the succession of later empires (Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman). During these latter stages, we consider the development of Judaism among these empires, extending through the Second Jewish Revolt of 135 and the desolation of Jerusalem.
