POL 660 Compromise

Ordinary, everyday political compromise is simultaneously undertheorized and underappreciated. This interdisciplinary course will explore political compromise in some of its most important literary, theoretical, philosophical, empirical, and historical manifestations and with a special emphasis on the development of American politics before the Civil War. Case studies may include the Missouri Compromise, the Nullification Crisis, and the Compromise of 1850. Through the course of these studies and intense seminar discussions, it is hoped that a new appreciation for and perhaps new theory of compromise will emerge.
