GL 757 Introduction to Palaeography and Textual Criticism

The course offers an introduction to Textual Criticism. In a healthy balance between theory and practice, the course will present the main principles that inform the constitution of a critical text, focusing especially on the methodological problems. By referring to different case studies both in Greek and Latin, we will gain a deeper understanding of how the critical editions of Greek and Latin texts from both Antiquity and Middle Ages have been produced by modern scholars. We will also take into account the substantial help that IT-technology can offer to scholars nowadays. In this framework, should the students need it or require it, a basic introduction to Paleography will also be provided.
