DR 645 College Teaching and Course Design
Graduate students who hope to teach at the college level will learn and practice effective ways to design and deliver courses. Readings and discussions will focus on various models of course design, principles of adult learning, formative and summative evaluation, and approaches to in person, online, and hybrid teaching. The design aspects include creating a syllabus, writing a teaching philosophy, planning the course calendar (scope and sequence of topics), writing course goals, objectives, and learning outcomes, and varying the types of assignments. Course delivery activities will span the basics from taking attendance to the larger interactions like encouraging active student participation, engaging multiple intelligences, adding visuals, leveraging technology, and using learning platforms like Blackboard. Students will engage in practice teaching and assessment development - create rubrics, write assignments, tests, quizzes, and consider alternate assessment methods.
