ART 516 Introduction to Crusader Art and Archaeology
This class will examine the history of art and archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean between the years of 1080 and 1291, as well as the aftermath of the Crusades in Cyprus and Malta. The course will introduce students to the most important archaeological sites that demonstrate Byzantine, Crusader, and Islamic cultural interaction, as well as the most significant examples of Crusader art and architecture in the Near East. To accomplish this, students will learn how to use art historical methods to examine and analyze Crusader art and architecture, interpret archaeological records, and consult primary documents (in English translation), including travel diaries, historical records, and contemporary maps.
