BE 410 AI and Machine Learning for Healthcare and Biomedicine
This course introduces the principles and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in healthcare and biomedicine, how AI is transforming medical imaging, digital pathology, disease prediction, drug discovery, genomics, public health and personalized medicine.
Students will learn core ML concepts including supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, model evaluation, and interpretability and apply them to specific healthcare problems through hands-on projects. The course also addresses key challenges such as data quality, bias, fairness, privacy, and ethical considerations in clinical AI deployment. The course also introduces practical skills for working with modern AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), including effective prompt design and critical evaluation of AI-generated content for biomedical research and healthcare applications. By the end of the course, students will understand both the technical foundations and the translational considerations necessary to responsibly develop practical skills in deploying and evaluating AI models for healthcare applications.
