ANTH 353 Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has become as indispensable tool in engineering, the natural sciences, and the social sciences for understanding, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data. This course provides an in-depth exploration of GIS applications within these fields, offering students a comprehensive understanding of how spatial analysis can enhance research in domains from resource management, environmental assessment, and transportation to political science, public health, and urban planning. Through a combination of lectures, exercises, and hands-on projects, students will develop proficiency in using ArcGIS Pro, the industry-standard GIS software platform, to address real-world social issues and challenges. The course will cover fundamental concepts of GIS, spatial data types, data acquisition and management, geospatial analysis techniques, and cartographic visualization methods that are in demand in a wide range of sectors, including engineering firms, environmental consultants, construction companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and research institutions.
