PSY 809 Child and Adolescent Psychopathology and Assessment

This course offers a developmentally informed overview of psychopathology in childhood and adolescence, emphasizing biological, psychological, and contextual risk and protective factors (e.g., family, community, and cultural influences). Students are introduced to core theories and methods for assessing emotional, cognitive, behavioral, personality, and social functioning in youth, with a focus on hypothesis development and testing, selection of appropriate assessment tools, and evaluation of functioning across multiple domains. The course examines how assessment data inform case conceptualization, diagnosis, and intervention planning. The course by itself is not intended to qualify students to administer and interpret the described measures as part of service delivery; such qualification requires supervised clinical experience with the measures.
