NURS 475AC Accelerated Mental Health Nursing

The focus of this course is on the biological, psychological, and social/learned basis of psychiatric disorders. This course builds on the concepts from basic psychology and physiology to the study of pathology of mental illness. The course explores nursing interventions including the use of the Nurse-Patient Relationship, the use of medications and managing the patient's environment and social milieu. Recovery concepts are incorporated as are the issues of stigma. Legal and ethical issues frequently encountered in the area of psych/mental health nursing are addressed. Self- awareness, personal growth, socio-cultural sensitivity, and professional development are vital components of the course. Contemporary mental health issues and their sequela are addressed. Content will include integration of nutrition and Catholic Identity.
