MUS 123 Harmony I
Elementary concepts of tonal music, including written and keyboard assignments. Notation, terminology, rudiments, figured bass, diatonic triads and seventh chords, plus an introduction to cadences and nonchord tones. Introduction to part writing of triads and seventh chords in root position and inversions, and harmonic analysis. Musicianship component: practical application in rhythmic reading and sight-singing tonal music. Attention to rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation. Emphasis on diatonic materials.
