GS 346 Protest to Policy: Social Movements and Criminal Justice Reform

Can social movements truly effect change within the legal system? This interdisciplinary course explores how social movements effect change within the legal system. Through historical and contemporary case studies, this course examines the strategies used by activists, such as protests, litigation, digital advocacy, and direct action, and their interactions with government responses like repression and reform. Combining lectures, interactive activities, and creative projects, students will develop critical thinking and digital skills. By the end, students will gain an understanding of how grassroots activism can transform into concrete legislative change.
