ENG 310 Writing Long-Form

In this class, students will have the opportunity to make substantial progress on a long-form piece of writing -- novel, novella, linked-story-collection or memoir -- with sustained tutorial-style feedback and workshops, both in group settings and individual tutorial-style meetings. Through reading novellas and short novels, and workshopping their own and one another's works, students will have the opportunity to think not only about sentence-level craft but also about structure of a larger whole. Students will be asked to write a full outline/treatment of their planned piece, along with 5-10,000 words of materials. Time will also be dedicated to learning about the publishing industry and the process of selling work professionally -- from querying agents to writing pitch letters.
