EE 477 Fund of Electronic Warfare
Electronic Warfare (EW) refers to the use of electromagnetic and electronic systems to control the electromagnetic environment in military operations. EW can be actuated 1) offensively, to interfere with and deny adversaries' use of the Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) to conduct their military operations and 2) defensively, to protect one's own capability to use the EMS against adversaries' efforts to interfere with and deny that use. EW encompasses contributions from nearly every branch of electrical and electronic engineering, from RF and microwave circuits and systems to power electronics, antennas, control systems, signal processing, and beyond. This course presents, at an introductory level, a panoramic view of systems and techniques in current use or in the process of being developed by the world's most advanced military organizations, using information that is publicly available. The focus is on the engineering aspects of EW technologies, rather than on their strategic and operational value on the battlefield, so no background in military science is required. Although some knowledge of electromagnetic theory and signal processing may be desirable, the course is designed to be largely self-contained.
