CHN 101 Elementary Chinese I

This course introduces students to the language and culture of the global Mandarin Chinese-spoken community. It is designed for students with diverse needs and interests in pursuing Chinese as a foreign language. It focuses on conversations on everyday topics, such as self-introduction, family, hobbies, etc. Students learn the fundamentals of Chinese language through contextualized examples and use vocabulary and grammatical structures in real communication. This course also provides students with the opportunity to participate in cultural dialogues and discussions that can facilitate deep learning and meaningful relationship-building in the spirit of the University's mission. This course utilizes a flipped classroom model, which assists students in engaging in active learning interactive activities, small group discussions, and presentations. Students work with videos, podcasts, and short texts to develop the linguistic and cultural skills they need to navigate day-to-day interactions and become more attentive to the values of Chinese culture and the meaning of the human person.
