CHEM 112 Intro to Scientific Research

This course provides undergraduate students with a foundational experience in scientific research through guided observation and shadowing of senior students actively engaged in research projects. For one hour per week, students in their first, second, or third year will observe and participate in research, gaining insight into methodologies, data analysis, and lab techniques. Through this mentorship, students will learn the basics of experiment and project design, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The course aims to demystify the research process, helping students understand how scientific knowledge is generated. By the end of the course, students will have developed a foundational skill set and an appreciation for the execution of scientific research, preparing them for future independent research projects. No prior research experience is required. Students currently or previously engaged in 493-level research project may enroll, but cannot use these courses to continue research in the same laboratory where a 493-level course was conducted.
