ANTH 110 Speech and Experience: Global Languages and Immigration

This interdisciplinary course examines how language reflects and shapes social inequalities within immigrant communities, emphasizing identity, power dynamics, and access to resources. Using empirical research and social science theory, students will explore topics including language use, the cognitive approach to language development, as well as code-switching and language performance in diverse social contexts. The course aims to provide a holistic grounding in the methods, theories, and scholarship practices of social sciences, enabling students across disciplines to understand the social science perspective and its uses for the betterment of individuals and societies. This course is aligned with the University's missions, aiming to offer students various opportunities to explore how speech binds communities, differentiates them from others, and symbolizes our place in the world, thereby addressing enduring questions about what makes us human.
