Mathematical Calculation Testing Policy
Nursing Mathematical Calculation Testing Process for Fall 2025 Seniors (class of 2026):
1. Students cannot administer medication until they pass the nursing mathematical calculation test (math test).
2. Math testing will be embedded into N376c Adults in Health and Illness II (clinical).
3. A team of Med-Surg Task Force members will assemble the initial math test that would be given in person, using electronic technology, assembled employing a testing blueprint, on the day of Fall clinical orientation.
4. Students will be directed to utilize the materials (recorded lectures, PowerPoints, and learning packets) located in Brightspace to prepare over the summer.
5. Students will take the exam in person on the day of clinical orientation at the start of the Fall semester.
6. Students who do not pass with a 90% on the first attempt will enroll in math remediation software selected by the Baccalaureate Curriculum Committee (BCC) at their own cost. The Med-Surg Task Force will make a plan for students with financial difficulties.
7. Students who do not pass with a 90% on the first attempt will achieve a specified level of mastery on identified math remediation software modules.
8. Students who do not pass with a 90% on the first attempt will take a second round of testing at least two weeks (but no more than three weeks) after the initial test, with the Med-Surg Task Force assembling the test, employing a testing blueprint, after students have completed the math remediation software modules.
9. Students who do not pass with a 90% on the 2nd attempt will be directed to secure tutoring at their expense and will complete a Nursing Mathematical Calculations experience with hands-on medical mathematical calculations.
10. The third math test will be assembled, using a testing blueprint assembled by the Med-Surg Task Force, administered using electronic testing software, at least two weeks (but no more than three weeks) after the 2nd test.
11. Students who do not pass on the third attempt with a 90% will not pass NURS 376C (see Student Handbook for progression implications).
Medical Mathematical Calculation Testing Process for Fall 2025 Juniors (Class of 2027):
1. Students cannot administer medication until they pass the nursing mathematical calculation test (math test).
2. Students will complete nursing math modules as part of NURS 309 Fundamental Applications. Students will also complete a Nursing Mathematical Calculations experience with hands-on medical mathematical calculations during N309 Fundamental Applications lab.
3. The math testing will occur during NURS 309 Fundamental Applications.
4. The math testing will be given in person, using electronic testing software, and take place the week after MidTerm.
5. The Med-Surg Task Force will assemble the initial math test, employing a testing blueprint
6. Student who do not pass the initial testing with a 90% will take a second round of testing, using a testing blueprint assembled by the Med-Surg Task Force, at least two weeks (but no more than three weeks) after the initial test.
7. Prior to the second attempt, the students will complete remediation specified by the Med-Surg Task force, in collaboration with the Baccalaureate Curriculum Committee. Students who do not pass the 2nd attempt with a 90% will enroll in math remediation software selected by the Baccalaureate Curriculum Committee (BCC) at their own cost, and will achieve a 90% level of mastery on identified modules a week prior to test administration. The Med-Surg Task Force will make a plan for those with financial difficulties.
8. The third math test will be assembled, using a testing blueprint assembled by the Med-Surg Task Force, administered using electronic testing software, at least two weeks (but not more than three weeks) after the 2nd test.
9. Students who do not pass on the third attempt with a 90% will not pass NURS 309 Fundamental Applications (see Student Handbook for progression implications).
