POL 621A The Political Thought of Alexis de Tocqueville
This course, offered for both advanced undergraduates and graduate students, is a deep dive into the mind, life, and times of Alexis de Tocqueville. We will read his major published works -- Democracy in America and the Ancien Regime and the Revolution -- as well as his letters, lesser known published writings, and additional complementary authors -- Constant, Guizot, Mill, Marx, etc -- and secondary literature readings to flush out the "strange liberalism" of this thinker of distinctive importance to America, France, and modern democracy.
