GS 101 Introduction to Global Studies

This course is required for completion of both the Global Studies major and minor. For the first third of the course, students will study the interconnections between language and culture. For the second third, students will be introduced to major global regions and communities (including Asia, Africa, The Americas, Europe, and the Middle East) and will review histories, politics, and cultures of each. For the final third, the class will review major contemporary issues that are transnational and global, which might include economy and trade; culture and media; ecology and the environment; health and equity; migration; peace and conflict; science and technology; faith communities and religious traditions. Student-led field trips in Washington, D.C. and in-class presentations from professionals working in international fields will be an essential part of the course.
