GER 270 Exile, Trauma, and Displacement in German Literature
This course explores notions of exile, refugee status, and the crossing of political and cultural boundaries to and from the German-speaking countries in the 20th and 21st centuries. Course readings focus on personal narratives and literary works that were written at a time and place when Germany, Austria, and Switzerland both displaced and welcomed those seeking to escape persecution and violence. The course will explore migration in a historical, cultural, and literary perspective. Taught in English.
