CLAS 308 The Etruscans: Archaeology, Language, and History
The Etruscans (rasenna/rasna) built a flourishing network of cities in northern Italy during the first millennium BC. They are chiefly known through funerary inscriptions, observations by Greek and Roman writers, and abundant archaeological remains, including works of art now located in collections in the US and around the world. This course surveys Etruscan history, language, and material culture with an interdisciplinary focus on myth, religion, and the family. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the Etruscan language, read Etruscan texts, and use evidence from Etruscan art and archaeology to unlock the mysteries of this historically fascinating civilization. The course features illustrated lectures, language study, and the reading and discussion of primary texts.
