AFRI 230 Civil Rights and Race

This course will examine the impact of the concept of civil rights on the historical and legal experience of African Americans in the 19th and 20th century. Tracking the origins of the concept of civil rights and major civil rights events, the course will unearth the development of the concept as a vehicle for change for people of color. Course materials will include materials from all three branches of American government and feature the African American voice. Key subjects areas to be explored include: Reconstruction, Twentieth Century Civil Right Movement, United States Supreme Court, Black American media and Affirmative Action Today. Students will complete a civil rights service learning project and participate in a moot argument.
