Certificate Programs

The School of Business offers two certificate programs:

Graduate Certificate in Business and Human Rights

The Graduate Certificate in Business and Human Rights is a non-degree graduate certificate program designed to provide current and aspiring Human Resources professionals with an understanding of the various human rights issues that are relevant to the management of the contemporary workforce, such as competing shareholder versus stakeholder approaches to corporate management, and their significance for the practice of business. Concerns about these issues is growing in the academy and in the business world, with new programs being established at other schools. It is appropriate for The Catholic University of America to offer a certificate program for busy professionals to take on a part-time basis. The proposed certificate is offered as a collaboration between the Busch School of Business and the Human Rights Program of the Institute for Human Ecology, with students matriculating in the Busch School. It will offer the perspective of Catholic social thought, responsible entrepreneurial enterprise, current (and historical) human rights theory, and the American legal/political framework.

The program requires four 3-credit hour courses, for a total of 12 credit hours, and is designed to be taken on a part-time basis, one or two courses per semester, allowing for completion on a part-time basis in one to two academic years.

The certificate program is open to non-degree students who meet the University’s requirements for enrollment in masters-level courses. Admissions are on a rolling basis, and requirements include an official transcript and a $60 application fee. GRE, TOEFL, or letters of recommendation are not required.

Graduate Certificate in Church Administration &
Graduate Certificate in Church Leadership

The Busch School of Business offers two Graduate Certificate Programs designed to equip seminarians, clerics, religious, and school, parish, and diocesan administrators with the virtues of leadership and the hard skills of business. With the aim to foster best managerial practices, especially for parishes, schools, hospitals, and non-profits, the courses include accounting, finance, planning, decision-making, crisis communications, fundraising, patrimonial canon law, and personnel management.

The certificates require successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of courses selected directly from the full M.S. in Ecclesial Administration and Management  curriculum. The Certificate Program in Church Leadership requires the two core courses of EAM 504 and EAM 506, focused on the virtues of leadership in an ecclesial context. The Certificate Program in Church Administration requires the two core courses of EAM 512 and EAM 513, focused on the hard and soft skills of administration. After completion of a certificate, students may apply the credits towards the full M.S. in Ecclesial Administration and Management degree program.

The following two bundles of selected courses are recommended:
1) For Seminarians pursuing the Certificate in Church Leadership: EAM 501, EAM 502, EAM 503, EAM 504, EAM 505, and EAM 506 (12 credit hours)
2) For Pastors and Parish or School Administrators pursuing the Certificate in Church Administration: EAM512 and EAM 513 and any selection of courses from EAM 506, EAM 514, EAM 515, and EAM 516 amounting to at least 12 credit hours.

These certificates integrate a theological foundation within a spiritual framework and contribute to safe environment policies designed for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults.  With more efficient administration of Catholic organizations and effective, mission-driven cooperation among leaders and employees, the programs will help increase revenue and save money. Most importantly, these certificates will assist the Church in her mission to save souls.

Designed to be taken part-time and self-paced, courses can be completed in one or more years. The courses are delivered asynchronously and online with the exception of EAM 512 and EAM 513, which are in-part online and in-part a one week in-person immersion for both courses together.

EAM 501 and EAM 502 will be offered in every semester. EAM 512 and EAM 513 will be launched in Summer 2023 with the other courses following sequentially in the Fall of 2023 and the Spring of 2024. All of the courses will eventually be offered in every semester except for EAM 512 and EAM 513 which includes the in-person experience and will be offered at least once a year.
