ECST 775 Theodoret the Historian

The course focuses on Theodoret's 'Historia ecclestiastica', paying chief attention to its particular 'slant' on the events of Theodoret's own day. The opportunity occurs, however, to examine Theodoret's sources, especially Eusebius of Caesarea, and contemporary components of the genre - Socrates, Sozomen, and Philostorgius. A secure knowledge of Greek will obviously be an advantage; but it will not be demanded of students outside the Early Christian Studies program, unless there own curriculum prescribes it. Translations in English and other modern languages are available.
