ECST 610 The Material World of Early Christianity

This course studies the material culture of Early Christianity from the first through the seventh century AD. Subjects covered include Early Christian archaeology, art history, and architecture; the materiality of liturgy, ritual, and healing; sacred space and time; Christianity and the urban fabric; material expressions of Christian identity; economy, geography, and travel; and the lived experience of Christian faith in a diverse religious world. Reading and class discussion will be supplemented by illustrated lectures, student reports, and contact with archaeological, manuscript, and numismatic holdings at CUA. A final research paper is required.
